On my way home from Harvard square, stumbled upon a live performance in Weirdo Records. Luther Gray, a Boston local jazz/experimental drummer, was performing a solo improvised percussion set. While I was there, Gray spent a good 10 minutes on the floor tom alone, beating the drum with one stick while pressing the other into the skin to alter the pitch. After the first solo, he simply placed his sticks down on the kick drum, looked up, adjusted his glasses, and then grabbed a set of brushes to begin the next solo.
